TOBAGO & OUR LOCATION

Tobago is undoubtedly the jewel in the Caribbean.

Situated at the southernmost end of the Caribbean archipelago, the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago are actually geologically part of the South American continent and the flora and fauna bears more resemblance to their South American neighbours than to other Caribbean islands. Tobago has the oldest protected rainforest in the western hemisphere and the lush green mountainous terrain makes touring this small 26x8 mile a ‘must’ for every visitor.

Being only 11° north of the equator, temperatures in Tobago are remarkably consistent all year round. The island has three seasons – the ‘Wet Season’ (June to November), the ‘Dry Season’ (December to May) and ‘Carnival Season’ that runs all year round, but peaks with Carnival, normally in late February.

Tobago has a population of 53,000. Tobagonians are a deeply proud and religious people, primarily of African descent, who have given the island an enviable reputation for warmth and friendliness. The island has changed hands more than thirty times since Columbus first sighted ‘Bella Forma’ five hundred years ago. It is almost as if Tobagonians are surprised that anyone should be interested in their spectacularly beautiful island.

Tobago is home to more than 220 species of bird, making the island a highly popular choice with bird watchers. The seas off the island also boast some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean, including the largest brain coral in the world. However, above and beyond all of this, Tobago is best known as a holiday destination to lime – the local term for relaxing and chatting to friends and family, or simply having a good time.

Because of its distance from Europe and North America, Tobago has remained largely undeveloped and this is a large part of its special charm. There is no industry on the island and the local population have traditionally depended upon fishing and subsistence farming for a living. It was only with the opening of the International airport in 1990, and the subsequent introduction of direct international flights, that tourism received a kick-start on the island. The airport now handles more than a dozen weekly direct flights from the UK, Germany and North America, with many more flights anticipated in coming years.

Paradise Found Villa is located just fifteen minutes drive from the airport, on the lower slopes of Mount Irvine – one of the most attractive and desirable locations on the island. The villa is a short drive from the capital Scarborough and the more developed and commercial area of Crown Point with its wide choice of restaurants, bar and shops.

Our villa is located opposite the Mount Irvine Beach Facilities, which has a small bar/restaurant, changing rooms and toilets. Several other beautiful beaches are within walking distance, one of which offers the best surfing on the island. Most of the sailing and deep sea game and sport fishing boats operate out of Mount Irvine beach, where visitors can also arrange other water sports such as water-skiing, scuba diving, and snorkelling. The warm waters off Tobago provide some of the best game fishing in the Caribbean. A popular bird sanctuary is just a two-minute drive from the villa.

The famous 18-hole Mount Irvine Bay Golf Club is only a short walk from our villa and Tobago’s new and more challenging Tobago Plantations golf course only a ten minute drive away. Le Grand Courlan Resort & Spa, which has the best spa and beauty treatments on the island, is little more than a two minute drive away. Sister-hotel, the Grafton Beach Resort, has the only squash courts on the island. These facilities are all available to the public and therefore to guests of Paradise Found Villa.

Our villa is located on the north coast road, which runs alongside the Caribbean Sea. Many of Tobago’s best restaurants are located along this road. If you fancy a change from self-catering, or simply a change of venue, more than dozen popular restaurants are within a few minute's drive of the villa, many of which are bound to tempt your appetite.
